Dragon by FrogPond Dragon by FrogPond
This is a bit of a change for me. I do many animals, and lately I have done the Dragon Babies series, but this time I found a wonderful sketch done by :iconrandomblah: <img src="http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/44296755/" alt="Dragon" />

This is such a detailed and perfect sketch that I was able to go right to the wood with the drawing with no changes or touch ups. Any differences between the two are due to the limits of the woods, or the wood carver.

This carving is mostly sycamore with 4 different colors with some ebony, maple, aspen, and yellow heart.

As always no paint or stain just clear urethane to protect and enhance the wood.

Humm... not the first - or last background I wood have chosen for a lovely piece like this. Though I don't see much in the way of intersia, this ranks up among the more interesting examples in my opinion.

Oh, the Scales have a funny way of showing the grain through, but you didn't curve the progress of the grain with the curvature of the neck, was that intentional?

And, a final note, in no way meant to cause insult, could I suggest that you stain the areas that would be more receded, to give it the aura of being pulled back? I think that, unless it compromises your principles, that it might bring forth the design a little more.

1/D to 3D you did a perfect job nice selection of colors it feel and look like a living creature aka birds and reptiles. Very smart you didn't fall for the traditional colors of black, grey or red as most are influence from movies as dragon slayer etc.

Thanks. As for the colors, I chose more for grain after choosing the pallet. When working with natural woods it is much better to base the work on contrast and grain choices. Colors can be done, but you loose the texture if you are a slave to the color. Most of the reds and blacks in the natural wood colors have very slick or oily looking textures when polished. I will be doing one in golds in the next few weeks.
